THE BEATLES

The Beatles' impact on popular culture during the 1960s has left a huge legacy of memorabilia for the Rock 'n' Roll enthusiast to collect. The world-record price for any Rock 'n' Roll object, ever, was the $2.3 million that a Canadian businessman paid, in 1985, for John Lennon's psychedelic Rolls Royce Phantom V at a Sotheby's auction. This was almost matched, in 2000, by the $2.1 million George Michael paid for the piano that John Lennon used to compose Imagine.

Other sought-after items include letters, photographs, band clothing and autographs.

For the more modest collector there is a whole range of Beatles merchandise that was produced to capitalize on the Fab Four's popularity. Aside from the predictable concert programmes, posters and badges, The Beatles found their way onto items as diverse as tea trays, curtains, lampshades, colouring sets, board games, coat hangers and plates. You could even become an instant 'moptop' with a Beatles wig.

ThE BEAILES

it is impossible to imagine the modern world without The Beatles. Such is their impact on popular culture that you can guarantee that at any given time someone somewhere on the planet is listening to one of their records. But the impact of The Beatles extends far beyond music.Their emergence from Liverpool as the 1gbus dawned saw them herald a new optimistic era for teenagers the world over. basting of post-war druagery, they initially shone as beacons of wholesome hope and, with a clean-cut image that belied their own anti-establishment tendencies and sharp wit, they delivered statements that influenced the worlds of fashion, media, social mores and the very business of entertainment. Midway through our fourth decade since their split, you can still see, hear and feel The Beatles everywhere. Of course, despite their wider impact, music remains Key to the world's love affair with John, Paul, George and Ringo. They remain the benchmark by which all other bands and musicians are measured. Stop and think about The Beatles songs that you know and you arrive at double figures before you've even managed to sing one of their more familiar refrains. The key to this musical timelessness is the remarkable 'everyman' quality that much of their work possesses, the result of lessons learnt in their early days pleasing the crowds in Hamburg and The Cavern. Juxtaposed with this are later layers of sophistication, emotion and idealism that added further depth to the very concept of The Beatles. It is this powertul combination of soulful simplicity, wit, individuality and craft that encourages our positive image of the 'Fab Four' to endure. An image that means, as the world's best loved band for close to 50 years, The Beatles are forever.
