Released in 1966 by the American band The Beach Boys and still regarded as their masterpiece, *Pet Sounds* was composed by the band’s frontman, Brian Wilson, as a response to *Rubber Soul*, an album released by The Beatles in 1965.
The Beatles – and in particular John Lennon and Paul McCartney – never made any secret of their esteem and admiration for the work of their American counterparts, stating on more than one occasion that they had been inspired to create *Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band* – another masterpiece by the Liverpool group – by listening to what is considered one of the greatest albums in the history of music.

Contemporary sources report that Brian Wilson fell into a deep depression when he heard *Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band* because he felt it would be impossible to surpass the Beatles’ work with any future album.
